Most metal detectors only work from anywhere between an inch and and a foot deep.

Most visual id detectors will identify a coin up to 6 inches deep. After 6 inches you will get a signal but the id may be off. In other words a coin may read like metal trash if its down around 9 or 10 inches. Many people dig every signal regardless of the reading for this reason. Also… the amount of soil mineralization will sometimes affect the depth.

three different types of Metal Detectors

Some metal detectors use BFO (Beat Frequent Oscillation). This technology contains two coils of wire. The two coils are represented by two wires which is the large and the small. The large coil can be found in the search coil of the detector while the small coil is found on the System Control Pack. The coils are connected to an oscillator which produces pulses of current. The pulse passes through the coils in order to generate radio waves.

A receiver within the System Control Pack receives the radio waves causing it to make a series of tones which is based upon the frequencies coming from the radio waves. Once the detector search coil encounters a coin or any metal item, it is surrounded by a magnetic field which causes interference with the frequency. The tone produced by the receiver is then changed. In choosing the best detectors, you should pick the ones with BFO. This technology is the easiest to use and the cheapest to own.

Some metal detectors using PI (Pulse Induction) technology often makes use of a single coil or even a series of coils that works as a receiver and the transmitter. The short bursts of electricity are allowed to pass through a coil or wire which causes magnetism. The magnetic field will reverse its polarity if the bursts of electrical current are stopped.

More pulses are created when sharp electrical spike is created. Then the whole process will repeat and works like a series of echoes, giving it a different report which depends on the metal it has encountered. Therefore, this type of detector is not that ideal for discrimination between the various types of metals or coins. This is appropriate to use in areas where salt-water and metals can be detected.

VLF (Very Low Frequency) is a metal detector having two search coils. The two coils are the “transmitter coil” which rapidly transmits electricity and the other coil known as the “receiver coil”. The activity of this coil is implied in its name already. It is responsible for receiving frequencies that bounce back from the object that the coil detects. This type of detector is best for identifying different types of metals.

You are warned against trying to use any of the Best Top Rated Metal Detector without getting familiar with the instruction booklet first (because if you don’t know what you’re doing, you’ll be frustrated and decide the detector doesn’t work right).

It seems that people are fascinated in watching someone using a metal detector and want to be around just in case you make that big discovery of something valuable… start considering using your metal detector at certain times of the day where there will be fewer people just so you will not have to deal with onlookers and will be free to use my detector in peace.

the Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector does what it claims to do. The dials are pretty much common sense, but I would read the instructions for fine tuning.

Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detecto uses 2 9 volt batteries and is a good buy for the price.

TIPS: if you have any issue hearing exact tones, you may want to get a different one. The trash eliminator, at times, sounds almost the same as when it is off.

I reccomend getting rechargeable batteries due to the short battery life.

Aluminum siding bits seem to give off same signals as coins

Good product for my purpose, August 25, 2011
By ChadB
This review is from: Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)

I bought the Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector because I just had my house re-roofed and the roofers did a terrible job cleaning up after themselves. I have two kids within a few years of age ten who love to play outside and kick off their shoes. One of my kids has a toy metal detector and he found quite a few nails but the detector was not very strong. So I purchased this detector and after an afternoon out in the yard, we picked up an additional 70-100 nails. We even found some small staples that must have been there since the house was built 15 years ago. I felt confident letting the kids run free in the yard again after seeing what the detector found. So, I may not have hunted treasures, but it helped me clean my yard of nails, screws, staples, even a pop top from a soda can and a buried toy car. If I had to go back in time and rethink my purchase, I would buy this detector again, no doubt.

Good for Beginners…, June 12, 2011

This review is from: Bounty Hunter Gold Digger Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)

We are building a house on a vacant lot in an old neighborhood, so I wanted a basic metal detector to see if there was anything intesting buried on our lot. I never used a metal detector before and decided to purchase the Bounty Hunter after reading all the positive reviews. This is a great metal detector at a good price for a beginner. It’s simple to setup and easy to figure out. I used it around our new house, and the “trash eliminator” option does a good job at not picking up the nails that are scattered around the building materials.

I’m not sure how standard this feature is on other metal detectors, but I wish this metal detector had a volume control option. The beeps are pretty loud if you don’t use the headphones and it’s hard to be discreet from nosy neighbors. Overall, I’m glad I bought the metal detector. Although we didn’t find anything of monetary value, we did find some cool things that make interesting conversation pieces.

Great for amateurs!, May 1, 2011

I bought this metal detector to go “treasure hunting” with my son. I have learned 2 things from the experience. 1. Living under power lines yields many old coaxial connectors and bolts and 2. This metal detector is perfect for my needs. The junk detector works well when you want it to. I could instantly predict when I had found a coin before digging with 90% accuracy (damn aluminum siding bits seem to give off same signals as coins). If you are just looking for a time to time toy to hunt metal with, this is a great choice. Don’t get tricked into spending a bunch of money on those detectors with a bunch of fancy features you will never use!

Top rated best gold metal detectors reviewed … CLICK HERE

the Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Metal Detector takes 2 standard 9 volt batteries and comes with a quick training manual that is extremely easy to understand. It also comes with tutorials for you to try, so that you get hands-on experience with the device, before you head out to do some real searching.

The keys to success in searching for a gold item seem to be:

Set the sensivity to high and the discrimination knob to about 75%; then “calibrate” your ears by scanning a known gold target and some other metal trash. With these settings we were able to ignore dozens of other metal objects. You want to hear a “low” alert tone.

Use the optional gold nugget detector for more accurate location of the target, although the standard coil did find the ring, about two inches deep in the sod.

Among the many objects detected, only 4 gave the characteristic low tone: 2 pieces of gold colored foil, a brass dog tag from a long dead family pet, and the ring.

Four metals seem to produce the “low” tone, although there be others.

Lead
Nickel
Brass
Gold

Rapid searches can be made in the non-discrimination mode and targets then checked by changing to the “tone” mode.

Invest in the 4 inch “Gold Nugget Coil” which is far superior at pinpointing metal. The stock coil works fine but is a tad ambiguous as to precisely where your coin, ring, (or pull tab) is. The smaller coil reduces search time and I am glad I have one.

I would recommend this detector to any beginner or even to a seasoned pro as a decent back-up detector.

TIPS: Using the Tracker IV discriminator, you will most likely be missing some good stuff. Going back over “Discriminated” areas again in “All Metal” mode should find you some nice stuff that Discriminate didn’t catch.

You need headphones or your batteries deplete quickly.

Bounty Hunter Tracker iv metal detector is waterproof!!, September 16, 2011
By BreezyKore “BreezyKore” (Cali USA)
This review is from: Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Tracker IV Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)

They did not mention in the users manuel that this MD was waterproof.I found out online through research. It’s my first detector. I took it out on the beach & i found 3 pennies, 1 quarter, 1 belt buckle thingy, and an old cool looking key. I think it’s awesome for the money!! I read the reviews here before buying it at Dick’s Sporting good store & i’m happy i picked it up. Looking for a MD for a decent price that works. I say go for it!!

Fantastic! – Even for a first timer!, August 8, 2011
By Megan M. Schoenherr (Michigan)
This review is from: Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Tracker IV Metal Detector (Lawn & Patio)

The TK4-PL Metal Detector was a great investment. I picked it up on sale for around $90, but would definitely be willing to pay full price.
I am hearing impaired (not completely deaf), so the tone discrimination is very hard for me to pick up. But all of the beeps are nice and loud so I do not have a problem catching them.
I use the headphones with it in order to preserve battery life, and so I don’t disturb the neighbors.
The very first thing I did was read the instructions and do the test it gives instructions for. Then my 12 year old sister and I headed out for a quick trip. We just went around our own yard and found a hunk of rusting metal and a penny! She was thrilled about the penny. The second time we went out onto a walking trail near us in the woods. We found several coins and some old metal zipper pulls from a company that makes camping equipment.
We are still exploring the rules of our area (yes..many cities and towns have rules about metal detecting, especially in their parks or on their trails.) As soon as we find some good places to go that allow metal detecting, we will definitely be out having fun!

it ACTUALLY works., July 17, 2011

I have tried three different metal detectors prior to the Bounty Hunter TK4-PL Metal Detector. This one is the first one I feel confident using. It picks up everything. I tried it out in my backyard and immediately found two metal items. Then I brought it to the beach and found a lot of random metal objects and then adjusted the settings and found 5 pennies. I’m sure once I find a better location I’ll find more fun things. Love it!

the garrett ace 350 Metal Detector has excellent detection depth, rugged design and ease of operation for a special price that can’t be beat.

The garrett ace 350 Metal Detector, a step up from the Garrett Ace 250 has all the features of the 150 and 250 but the 350 gives you so much more control over what targets you want to find.

The DD coil is very useful in pinpointing the location of the object.

TIPS: It works well but the monotone bong can drive you crazy!

Versatile and light metal detector–Ace 350, March 1, 2011
By Mike Brosnan (SoCal)

This metal detector is at the “sweet spot” in this category. It is more powerful, accurate, and informative than the special-of-the week units at stores; at the same time it is far less expensive than many middle of the road detectors.

Good balance and low overall weight are crucial, if you are going to be seeking finds for any extended period of time–the Ace 350 is very good in both areas. Having a good audible alarm is also important, especially if you are covering irregular ground.

In the sub-$500 range, this is a best buy.

Garrett ACE 350 does the job, May 15, 2011
By chad (NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, US)

After much review, I decided to purchase the Garrett ACE 350 to start my Metal Detecting Hobby. This machine is awesome and accurately identifies what’s below it. The DD coil is very useful in pinpointing the location of the object. I would recommend this product to any beginner or novice in the field. No need to spend over $300 if it’s just going to be a hobby. This will do the trick.

the Bounty Hunter QD2GWP Metal Detector (QDII) is a very good, feature rich, mid-priced metal detector.

The QDII has features that are generally only found on higher priced units:

* The LCD screen can indicate what type of metal has been found
* Indicates approximate depth
* The Notch Modes work well for filtering out most trash items

QD2GWP Metal Detector includes “bonus” items are a Carrying Bag (a little smallish, but functional) and a “Bounty Hunter Pinpoint Pinpointer” (a small metal detector used to help locate items in the ground). Both are good quality and useful to have with the QDII.

The bag is nice quality and has padding.

You get used to the different sounds and after a while can guess what metal you’re digging (tab, rusted can, etc).

When you get a consistent tone as you pass over a target, and the ID and depth, stays the same with each pass, in any direction, it will be the item on the screen, and at the estimated depth.

TIPS: The gold has the same sound as junk metal, so it is not a detector that distinctly identifies gold.

The Ace 250 seems to have the pinpointer built in. I’d rather use the separate one in this kit since your down on your knees at some point anyway.

It is perfect for the first-timer or someone like me getting back into searching for treasures.

Good once you know how to use it, May 3, 2011
By Michael R. Brown
This review is from: Bounty Hunter QD2GWP Quick Draw II Metal Detector with Pinpointer and Carry Bag (Lawn & Patio)

People have unrealistic expectations when it comes to handheld pin pointers. I’ve read a lot of reviews calling them worthless. I think maybe the expectation is you get a signal with the metal detector, then expect to wave the pin pointer over the area and let it narrow you down to exactly where to dig.

They don’t work that way. Adjust the sensitivity to where it just stops buzzing. That will give you about 1″ of detection range. Use it to probe the bottom of a hole, poke through the rubble of a dig, or probe a divot. It’ll tell you if you’re close, or as in many cases, find the piece of metal that looks like a chunk of dirt. It’s not going to do the work for you in terms of telling you where to dig. What it will do in most cases, is shorten the search time once you’ve dug.

Learn to use the metal detector, and the pin pointer is useful. Expect it to do the work for you, and not so much.

Bounty Hunter Quick Draw 2 Metal Detector, April 20, 2010
By Michelle (COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, US)
This review is from: Bounty Hunter QD2GWP Quick Draw II Metal Detector with Pinpointer and Carry Bag (Lawn & Patio)

I did quite a lot of research before buying on all kinds and all prices of metal detectors. I found that for the price, the Quick Draw 2 had the options we wanted. I have been most pleased with this machine… if it tells me there is a coin..there is a coin. It has not been wrong yet. Batteries wear well. I haven’t had to change them in over a month and we use it a lot on the week ends, and some through the week. I would definitely recommend it. We have found numerous coins with it, and it has been great for us!
